Meyersdale and the Great Allegheny Passage

Everyone agrees the Big Savage Tunnel is by far one of the highlights of a trip along the GAP, and it’s less than ten miles from Meyersdale!
The historical Bollman Bridge is just a short mile-and-a-half ride outside of Meyersdale headed toward Frostburg and Cumberland, Maryland.

We’re a favorite stop along the GAP!

As the Great Allegheny Passage was being built in sections as a rails-to-trails project from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., interested persons in Meyersdale thought the abandoned Western Maryland station would be a place of interest on the trail and a great site for trail-related activities and amenities. A group formed as the Meyersdale Area Historical Society became the caretakers of the building and shepherded it through a major renovation project. This section of the trail has a number of notable features, including the Salisbury Junction Viaduct, the Keystone Viaduct and the Big Savage Tunnel.

Today, the restored Western Maryland Railway Station in Meyersdale is an official trailhead for the Great Allegheny Passage and an information center for Meyersdale and Somerset County Area.  The station features include the following:

  • Free parking directly adjacent to the trail
  • Restrooms
  • Picnic tables, bike racks, and benches
  • Self-service bike repair station
  • E-bike charging stations
  • Water fountain
  • Free Wi-Fi with available printer
  • Museum
  • Model train displays
  • Drinks and small snacks
  • Gift shop
  • Railroad equipment displays including a caboose
  • Information, maps, and orientation videos

There is no admission charge for the station facilities, museum, or displays. We opened our restored Western Maryland Railway Station Visitors’ Center and Museum for the 2024 season on April 8th, with the station being open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. seven days per week.
